is an academic mobility program between five Russian universities: ITMO University, Russian Academy of Foreign Trade, National Nuclear Research University MEPhI, Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, as well as the Russian University of Friendship between Peoples. ITMO students have the option of joining one of four Moscow-based universities, while 50 students from Moscow will be hosted here.
The main feature of this program is the ability to create your own individual learning path, which can include topics that are not related to your specialization. For example, ITMO photonics students can enroll in a modern art course at the Russian Peoples’ Friendship University, while economics students at the Russian Academy of Foreign Trade can study digital humanities at ITMO University.
The program is available for students in the second to fourth year of the baccalaureate in one of the five partner universities. The deadline to apply is August 15.
First, students can enhance their learning experience by gaining new connections, knowledge, and memories. Second, they will experience what it is like to study at another university. Third, participants have the opportunity to study a new course unrelated to their specialization or, conversely, to deepen their expertise in their chosen field.
“Each partner university is excellent in its field and we believe that our students will enjoy studying various subjects, including those in the humanities or social sciences. We wish to diversify our courses by supplementing them, among other things, with subjects taught in other universities. We also appreciate social networks and communication between students from different institutions.
Additionally, we believe that students from other universities could benefit from being immersed in the values and environment of ITMO University. Maybe they could even take some of them back to their alma mater,” says Evgeny Raskin, head of the Youth Policy Department.
The duration of the exchange program is one semester. Some universities offer a place in their dormitories, while ITMO offers apartments at reduced rates. All classes take place offline.
Students can choose courses at any partner university. These subjects do not need to be relevant to their specialization. They can choose anything as an elective, whether it’s a course on leadership and presentation or a seminar on data journalism and visual storytelling. All will be listed in the diploma.
However, students should bear in mind that when they return to their home university, they will need to cover all the subjects of their program. This will be done either by transferring credits or, if the subjects they studied during the exchange do not correspond to the curriculum of their home university, by passing the corresponding exams.
In addition, the individual learning track and study schedule will need to be approved not only by the program manager at the home university, but also by the deans and tutors at the host university. Therefore, students should be prepared to justify their choice.
Subjects to choose from
Each partner university offers a unique range of subjects, some of which are totally unconventional. At ITMO, students can not only be interested in photonics, programming or information security, but also in storytelling, creative practices, emotional intelligence, modern art and dance improvisation.
MEPhI courses in mathematics, quantum and chemical physics, as well as process modeling and experimental design. At the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, students can enroll in courses in history, philosophy, law, and international relations. At the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration you will study public relations, economics, markets and game theory, while at the Russian Academy of Foreign Trade you will study management finance, human resources and trade.
Conditions and requirements
The participants will be chosen on the basis of a selection with different criteria, depending on the preferred university. Some institutions require a cover letter or essay in addition to the transcript, while others pay more attention to personal achievements and research results.
A common requirement is to have a high GPA (“good” and “excellent” grades) in the spring semester. Winners of student contests and competitions, as well as recipients of an enhanced academic allowance are given priority.
Some courses have prerequisites. For example, many computer science courses require basic programming skills.
Each university is prepared to accept a limited number of students: 10 for the Russian Academy of Foreign Trade, 15 for the MEPhI and 30 for the Russian Peoples’ Friendship University. ITMO is ready to accept 50 students from Moscow. They will be offered the rental of an apartment at a reduced rate, as well as access to all the infrastructures, including the ITMO library, the coworking spaces, the gym, as well as the sports and student clubs. .
