KDE Seeks Comments on Draft Kentucky Academic Standards for Social Studies – Kentucky Teacher
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is seeking feedback on the integration of components of Kentucky Revised Statute (KRS) 158,196 in the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Social Studies.
Section 4(3)(a) of Senate Bill 1 (2022) created KRS 158.196, which requires KDE to incorporate Fundamental American Documents and Speeches into appropriate academic standards of middle and high school social studies and to align the corresponding assessments. KDE brought together educators from across the state who serve on advisory boards and the Social Studies Review Board to incorporate foundational materials into the KAS for Social Studies.
SEK158.6453 calls on KDE to implement a review process for all academic standards and aligned assessments from the 2017-2018 school year. The schedule calls for one or two content areas to be reviewed each year, then every six years on a rotational basis.
To give your opinion on the draft KAS for Social Studies document, use the public comment form. The public comment period will last until September 30. Due to the amount of text, it is recommended that surveys be completed on a full-size computer or laptop screen. Feedback will be collected by the American Institutes for Research (AIR).
