Seven NIU Women’s Basketball Student-Athletes Named to All-MAC Academic Team
DeKALB, IL – The University of Northern Illinois women’s basketball team had seven student-athletes selected to be part of the 2020-2021 All-Mid-American Academic Conference women’s basketball team, a the league announced Wednesday morning.
“I am really proud of this group of student-athletes and the success they have had both on the field and in the classroom,” said the head coach. Lisa Carlsen. “This program has a reputation for high academic standards due to the student-athletes we continue to recruit into our program.”
Five Huskies earned their first All-MAC Academic Career Selection. Redshirt-Junior guard Janae Fish (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) adds that honor for her classroom work with the 2021 MAC’s Sixth Player of the Year award she has won this season. She is one of three winners of the All-MAC Academic Team with a grade point average of 4.0. Poisson led the MAC with a three-point field goal percentage of 45.1%, which was the ninth-best in the country.
Sophomore’s Guard Chelby koker (Racine, Wisconsin / Shoreland Lutheran), an All-MAC second-team pick, also won his first All-MAC academic honor. Koker led NIU in scoring last season with 21.1 points per game and led the conference in free shots with 89.4%. Classmates A’Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill./Montverde Academy[Fla.]) and Grace hunter are also part of this year’s All-MAC Academic Team with redshirt-senior Paulina castro (Elgin, Ill./Harvest Christian).
Senior striker Riley blackwell (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) won their third consecutive All-MAC Academic Selection. Junior Mikayla brandon (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) was named for the second time in the All-MAC academic team.
This is the fourth year in a row that the NIU has had at least six selected student-athletes to the All-MAC academic women’s basketball team.
To qualify for the All-MAC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have at least a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 and have participated in at least 50% of scheduled or completed competitions.
