Shortage of substitutes leading to some without teaching experience in the field
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The pandemic has hit the job market directly, making it difficult for some Americans to find and keep jobs. But here in Sioux City, it’s the opposite for some educators.
“I went to North High and didn’t think I would come back here,” said Jacob Moos, substitute teacher at North High School.
Jacob Moos is a substitute teacher in the Sioux City Community School District, but he does not have a teaching background.
“I am a new agent at Remax. With this, I create my own schedule. I decided to start subscribing after seeing on paper that they needed new subs and there was kind of a shortage of subs,” Moos said.
The school district needs to find new substitute teachers. The Director of Human Resources indicates that they are actively seeking to fill replacement positions.
“Currently, I would say our fill rate of substitutes, so the number of vacancies we’ve filled is probably hovering around 75 to 80 percent,” said Dr. Jen Gomez, director of human resources for the Sioux Community School District. City.
However, the requirements to become a substitute teacher have relaxed. People only need 60 credit hours at a college or university, plus earn their Iowa replacement licensing license through a 20-hour online course.
“I think we’re up about 20, maybe, since winter break. We have hired permanent substitute teachers in five buildings,” Dr. Gomez said.
Make the replacement qualification process easier for people like Moos.
“It’s virtual, it’s after hours and it’s a few days a week for two weeks. So it’s not too difficult,” Moos said.
And, midshipmen still have to go through a selection process.
“It all goes through the board of educational examiners when they apply for their license or authorization. And then, even as new recruits, we do our background checks as well,” Dr. Gomez said.
“As a real estate agent, you don’t make money unless you sell, and as a new agent, that doesn’t come very quickly. And so, being able to substitute, I’m able to earn enough money to work as much as I need to support my two children and my wife,” Moos said.
