SMSU SOFTBALL: SMSU’s Grote and Tomlinson take academic honors from CoSIDA | News, Sports, Jobs
MARSHALL – Southwest Minnesota State University senior softball players Emma Grote and Kali Tomlinson were both named to the 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District® 7 softball team released Thursday. The selection and announcement was made by the Directors of University Sports Information of America (CoSIDA) and recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined athletic and classroom performance.
This is the third year in a row that Grote has won the CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and the first for Tomlinson. Grote and Tomlinson are two of 14 selected for this year’s All-District team and will now both qualify for the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot, where the first, second and third All-Academic team winners will be selected at the end of July.
District 7 is made up of member schools of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), and Great American Conference (GAC).
A native of Blair, Neb., Grote had a cumulative GPA of 3.98 in exercise science. This season, she started all 47 games and hit .369 with four doubles, scored 35 points and finished with 15 RBIs. Four-time All-NSIC academy, Grote finished his career at a .324 stick in 188 career games with 205 hits. She ranks fourth in team history for hits and fourth in runs scored with 124.
Tomlinson, originally from Las Vegas, Nevada, finished with a GPA of 3.56 while earning her 2020 BS in Elementary Education. She is currently in graduate school at SMSU. Tomlinson won second-team All-NSIC honors this spring with a team record of 0.394 with an academic record of 17 doubles. She also clubbed 12 home runs and finished with 43 RBIs. Tomlinson closed his career number one in team history with a slugging percentage of 0.621 and also ranks second in doubles (42), third in homers (30), fourth in RBIs (123) and fifth for hits (199).
