Owner, Topdeal College, Ikorodu, Lagos, Dr Oladeji Akinola said the negative societal influence has affected the academic performance and moral values of the students.

Speaking at a seminar organized by Topdeal titled “Overcoming the Influence of Society in the Pursuit of Academic Excellence,” Akinola said, “We are in a society where our young people do not value education. not to mention character, because they are in a society where we honor fame and wealth.Young people are the key to sustainable development and quality of life in society;thus, the decline in values and the increase negative influence among our students, such as worship, prostitution, drug addiction, rituals, etc., are due to the high rate of negative influence in society.

He suggested that the step towards a better future was to invest in young people by giving them quality education and good character.

“A lot of students believed that school teaches them what maybe they don’t need in life, every time society tells them that school is the way, they will quickly send you back to a dropout or someone who didn’t go to school and is doing well and will also show you someone who graduated first class from college and is poor.

“My dear students, school is not a scam, to get to the top you have to work very hard in university, polytechnic or in the working world. Today, Nigerian youth do not think of effortless, short-lived comfort. You have to make frantic efforts to find a synergy between what is learned in school and what needs to be done to solve real-life problems; it is the right time to decide how to make a change and contribute positively to the evolution of the world.

A 400 level student in Educational Management from the University of Lagos, Miss Pelumi Fadiji, told the students that mobile phones will never help them gain influence in society.

She said, “You should let go of friends who have a negative influence on you.

“You will make mistakes but never stop being a fighter, engage in profitable pursuits, read widely to gain more knowledge, establish a good relationship with your parents, and never forget God.”

Also speaking, a pastor from Foursquare Church, Ikorodu, Pastor Felix King, advised the students to be determined and focused.
