Substitute teachers are in high demand as COVID-19 continues
The COVID-19 shutdown and the still uncertain job market have left many San Diego County school districts looking for teachers. Substitute teachers are in great demand for districts to maintain state-required classroom coverage.
Samantha Mohn, who her students call Miss Sam, is a new substitute teacher this week at Montgomery Middle School in Linda Vista. She teaches the grade 7 social studies class. It’s a far cry from the job she did in a law firm. The COVID-19 pandemic has left her wanting more for her future.
“This job helps me see the real issues kids are facing today and I can see what I can do to help and honestly I can also see the holes in the education system then when I get my diploma, I will be able to be the bridge to fix them. Gaps, âsaid Mohn.
She hopes to enter a master’s degree program in education next year. At the moment, she is a full-time supply teacher.
The San Diego Unified School District requires a bachelor’s degree in any field and a 30-day emergency teaching permit. The district is looking for qualified university graduates as confusion and uncertainty over COVID has drained the teaching pool. An underemployed paid about $ 125 a day. Now the daily wage rate has increased dramatically in San Diego and many other districts.
San Diego Unified starts at $ 172 per day up to $ 285 per day for a long-term resident submarine. In the Poway Unified School District of the Escondido Union High School District, the pay rate range is $ 180 to $ 200 per day. In the San Ysidro Unified School District, the salary peaks at $ 225 to $ 285 per day.
Acacia Thede is the Director of Human Resources for San Diego Unified. She said, âWe are all looking for substitute teachers, bus drivers, para-educators and people who work directly with our students. If you have a passion for children, any district in the county would love to have you.
In August, California Governor Newsom issued an executive order to help fill teaching positions. The decree provided more flexibility for retired teachers and school staff to return to fill short-term staff shortages. Retired staff can help schools affected by the increased case rate caused by the Delta variant stay safe and fully open. Usually there is a six month waiting period.
Substitute teachers are in high demand in all San Diego County school districts
Montgomery Middle School Principal Sarah Trueblood is always recruiting and sharing information with other principals about potential substitute teachers. She encourages any college graduate to apply for a position. She told KPBS News: âSubscribers always work with someone else in the classroom at least 50% of the day. You are not just cast on your own.
Samantha Mohn will complete her assignment at Montgomery Middle School on Friday, then look forward to her next job at another school. âIt’s a really tough career but it’s super rewarding,â she explained, âit’s the little things that I learn every day that I have to focus on. This is what keeps me going. “
