Train hits pickup truck in Pakistan, killing 3, injuring 7
Authorities say passenger train crashed into university van at unmanned level crossing in eastern Pakistan, killing three students and injuring seven others
LAHORE, Pakistan – A passenger train crashed into a college van carrying female students at an unmanned level crossing in eastern Pakistan in smog on Tuesday, killing three people and injuring seven others, a the police announced.
The accident happened in Sheikhupura district, Punjab province, according to Rana Shakeel, a senior district administration official. He said the dead and injured were taken to a nearby hospital.
Images on social media showed the badly destroyed pickup truck near the train tracks.
Irritated by the accident, residents briefly blocked the tracks, delaying some trains. Authorities say they have restored train service and officers are investigating the negligence that caused the crash.
Train accidents are common in Pakistan, where successive governments have paid little attention to improving poorly maintained signaling and aging tracks. In June, an express train struck another derailed train in southern Pakistan, killing around 50 passengers and injuring more than 100 others.
