Williams joins Cheniere, academic institutions, technology providers and other midstream companies to quantify, monitor, report and verify GHG emissions

TULSA, Okla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Williams (NYSE: WMB) today announced that it will work with Cheniere Energy, Inc., the largest U.S. producer of liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as other natural gas midstream companies , methane sensing technology providers and leading academic institutions to implement Quantification, Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (QMRV) of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in collection systems, processing, transmission and storage of natural gas. This collaboration with Cheniere will improve the overall understanding of GHG emissions and drive the deployment of the most advanced technologies and monitoring protocols to improve the supply and delivery of clean energy for Williams and its customers.
This announcement further supports Williams recently announced partnership with Context Labswhose technology solution will enable Williams to offer differentiated services to its customers across the entire natural gas value chain, providing end-to-end measured, verifiable and transparent emissions data for uptake capabilities real-time decision making.
Interim work on QMRV will be conducted by global emissions researchers at Colorado State University and the University of Texas. The measurement protocol designed by the research group and Cheniere will be field tested at facilities operated by the participating companies, including Williams’ Transco Pipeline, the nation’s largest natural gas transmission system that is also the one of the largest suppliers of natural gas to LNG. export facilities on the Gulf Coast.
The QMRV interim program involves a combination of ground-based, aerial and drone-based emissions monitoring technologies and requires emissions monitoring over at least a six-month period, with all data independently analyzed and verified by partners. academics of the project.
“Our large-scale clean energy infrastructure network is uniquely positioned to leverage this pilot program to develop a comprehensive system to accurately quantify emissions while connecting the cleanest energy sources to meet the real-time energy needs across the country and abroad,” said Chad Zamarin, Williams Senior Vice President of Strategic Business Development. “As our recent investment with Context Labs further demonstrates, Williams is committed to combining the best technology with meaningful strategies to facilitate and deliver responsibly sourced natural gas from wellhead to water.”
“Collaborating with our channel partners is a critical part of Cheniere’s efforts to measure and verify our emissions and seek reduction opportunities across our value chain,” said Scott Culberson, senior vice president of gas supply at Cheniere. “Williams is an essential teammate in this effort to provide cleaner energy sources around the world, and their leadership will help improve the environmental performance of natural gas and LNG in the United States.”
“Quantifying emissions requires scientifically rigorous methods that are unique to each segment of the industry. This R&D project, the first of its kind, will study the emissions performance of several intermediate facilities, not only through short-term spot checks, but over several months, using several monitoring technologies at several scales,” said said Dan Zimmerle, the principal investigator on the Colorado State University project who is also director of the school’s methane emissions program.
“It is vital for public policy and science that we have empirical measurement protocols, and most importantly, the complex and voluminous data collected is independently analyzed and verified by the scientific community,” said Dr Arvind Ravikumar, Professor in petroleum and geosystems engineering. department at the University of Texas at Austin.
